Lutaw
About
Alongside her rambunctious little brother, Isko, Geramy is determined to find a better way to commute to school.
The film has no dialogue in order to maximize international distribution and raise awareness of this important and far-reaching issue.
Inspiration for Lutaw
The project takes place in the Philippines and is based on the true story of students that swim between the small islands in order to travel to the nearest elementary or high schools in their remote areas.
As a Filipino-American, I was thrilled when an Oculus VR for Good fellow asked me to collaborate on a project about the incredible work of Yellow Boat of Hope.
Despite the extreme circumstances of these children, I strove to maintain the sass, spark, and innovation that runs deeply within the Filipinx culture.
When a person in headset witnesses Geramy’s gumption and refusal to quit, I wish for them to feel the compassion, authenticity, and warmth that I took in crafting the story.
Project Recognition
Lutaw was an Honoree for Best VR Video in the 25th Annual Webby Awards, a finalist for VR Film of the Year in AIXR's 4th International VR Awards, and a finalist for the Positron Visionary Award at Cannes XR 2020—a special jury prize for Best Cinematic XR.
The project was also awarded the Excellence in Digital/New Media Award at the 43rd Asian American International Film Festival, Best VR Experience & Immersive Impact Jury Prize for the Social Impact Media Awards (SIMA) 2021.
