Emerging Technology & Storytelling Residency
About the Residency
Alongside the Shangri-La programming and education team, Michaela advised and curated the inaugural Emerging Technology & Storytelling Residency.
During this program, a select cohort of artists, technologists, and storytellers, working in arenas such as 3-D world-building, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality interrogated new narrative frontiers through direct engagement with Shangri La’s creative campus which includes a world-renowned Islamic art collection.
During the residency, participants:
Advanced an independent or ongoing project while undertaking research in the collection and prototyping novel platforms that enhance public access and conservation insight.
Entered into sustained dialogue with Hawaiʻi’s creative sectors through workshops, cultural exchange, public programs, and peer-to-peer presentations.
Collaborated with local artists, cultural practitioners, and educators to generate dynamic encounters that foreground place-based knowledge, storytelling, and mutual benefit.
About Shangri-La: Museum of Islamic Art, Culture, and Design
Shangri La is a cultural and convening center in Hawai'i where art, ideas, and people come together. Founded by Doris Duke in the 1930s and home to the only U.S. museum dedicated to Islamic art, Shangri La supports residencies, fellowships, exhibitions, convenings, and digital storytelling. Through immersive experiences and global collaboration, we foster connection across disciplines, perspectives, and communities. We believe culture is dynamic — and that meaningful exchange can shape more creative, inclusive futures.
